Artist Profile

Nick Blaney, aka Good Night Vienna. Is an abstract artist, designer and mural painter based in London. Nick draws his inspiration from language and the contrasting realms of the built environment and the organic forms of nature.

With a background rooted in graffiti writing, Nick brings a unique and bold perspective to his artistic practice. Language, words and abstract forms of lettering continue to play a significant role in his paintings and serve as a key source of inspiration.

The shape and form of letters are often deconstructed or stripped back to minimal objects and textures. Combining these new objects with colour, alternate compositions are found, and arranged to create new aesthetics. His paintings are often a visual diary of the places he's been, and things he has heard, seen or experienced.

Whether it's large-scale murals, canvases, or small-scale commissions, Nick embraces a variety of mediums and formats to express his artistic vision. He’s flexible in his approach to work across different scales which allows for exploring diverse creative techniques and processes, ensuring a dynamic body of work.

Nick has collaborated with numerous artists throughout his career, creating captivating murals in various public spaces. These collaborative projects have provided him with invaluable experiences and opportunities to contribute to the artistic landscape, showcasing his talent and dedication to the craft. You can see more of these projects here.

Beyond his art practice, Nick is actively involved in the creative world as the co-founder, collaborator, and manager of Cotton & Guns Magazine, a non-profit photography publication. This additional role demonstrates his passion for supporting and promoting artistic endeavours in various forms including charity fundraising.

As an artist, Nick is conscious that some of his materials can sometimes be an issue for the environment and his

Carbon Footprint. So when and where he can, will he use an environmentally friendly alternative or reconsider the available options. Fortunately, more and more paint suppliers are becoming environmentally conscious, making this a lot easier than it used to be. When using such materials is unavoidable (for example, spray paint), as of 2023, he has pledged to plant four trees for each job that requires spray paint via his grove on Trees for Life.
